Clinical Trials & Noteworthy Treatments for Brain Tumors Copyright 1998, Musella Foundation For Brain Tumor Research & Information Updated: 11/20/98 This file is a plain text version of my web page which lists clinical trials and noteworthy treatments for Brain tumors. The web site is located at: http://www.virtualtrials.com I am not recommending any of these trials or treatments, just letting you know of their existence. Please let me know if you try any of these and your experiences with it. Please also let me know if there are any additions, corrections or deletions. This list is in constant revision. It does not contain all of the trials or treatments (yet!) but is a good starting point to look for trials. Call 1-800-4-Cancer to get the Official NCI list of clinical trials for your tumor type. I didn't add those to this list. Please see the above web page for more information. It contains this list in a better format, and also contains links to additional internet resources. I have set up a "Virtual Clinical Trial" to track the outcomes of these treatments. Check the above web site for details! To view this list, read it into your favorite word processor. You can format it and print it out, or use the word processor to search for specific words, like your tumor type or a facility name. Al Musella, DPM - Pres. RSR13 causes a change in the way that oxygen binds to blood. This change results in more oxygen being released into the body tissues, including brain tissues. Tumor tissues can have areas of low oxygen concentrations, which may cause radiation therapy to be less effective. By increasing the oxygen in tumor tissue, the effectiveness of radiation treatment on the tumor may be improved. Patients must have a histologically confirmed GBM, radiation therapy must begin within six weeks of GBM diagnosis, must have adequate pulmonary function and laboratory tests within specified ranges, must have no other serious medical ilness or current malignancy. Patients who are eligible and enrolled in the study will have a central access device placed and receive an intravenous infusion of RSR13 over a 30-minute period each day just prior to receiving radiation therapy. Thirty treatments of RSR13 and radiation therapy will be given over a six-week period. Patients will be evaluated for treatment effectivenss with brain scans and physical examinations every one-two months after the treatment period. No Brainstem Location. Comments: OKT-3 is a synthetic serum antibody. It is an FDA approved medication, made by state-of-the-art laboratory methods. This antibody reacts with a special protein on the surface of a certain white blood cell - the T-lymphocytes. It has been used in the past, at high dose, to counter the organ rejection in patients with kidney or other organ transplants. In this study, it is used at much lower doses, which has the opposite effect - it is an immune system stimulator. It increases the number of t-lymphocytes and alters their behavior to increase their cancer fighting ability. It is given by IV infusion over 60 minutes. 24 hours later, Cyclophosphamide is used, which also stimulates the immune system. This is done in a 2 - 3 day hospital stay. Treatments are repeated at 4 week intervals. (This was a brief summary of the information available. Call for more details.) RSR13 causes a change in the way that oxygen binds to blood. This study is being conducted in conjunction with the New Approaches to Brain Tumor Therapy. In chemosensitive tumors it may eliminate or reduce the need for radiotherapy with it's high rate of delayed radiation induced injury to the brain Treatment Categories: Chemotherapy Tumor Types: Anaplastic Astrocytoma, Lymphomas, Medulloblastoma, Metastatic Brain Tumor, Malignant Germ Cell Tumors, Glioblastoma Multiforme, Oligodendroglioma High Grade, PNET Tumor Contact Information: Name: Tali Siegal MD Hospital: Hadassah Hebrew University Hospital P.O.B. 12000 Jerusalem 91120 ISRAEL Voice: 972-2-677-7951 Email: siegal@hadassah.org.il Homepage: http://www.hadassah.org.il ====================================================================== Liposomal Doxorubicin For Primary Brain Tumors ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Trial #: 00394 Last Verified: 02/09/1998 Comments: Doxorubicin when entrapped within small sized liposomes penetrates the disrupted blood brain barrier. Once the liposomes are within the tumor mass they unload their content of chemotherapy by a "slow release" over several days. Animal studies showed high concentration of doxorubicin within the tumor and the adjacent brain and yielded promising results. This study is a multinational, randomized, phase 3 trial of crisnatol mesylate versus BCNU in the consolidative treatment of patients with glioblastoma multiforme. Patients will be randomized to receive either BCNU (IV infusion, every 6 weeks) or crisnatol (continuous IV infusion for 72 hours, every 3 weeks). Both treatments may be given on an outpatient basis. Patients must begin treatment for at least 2 weeks, but no more than 4 weeks after completing radiation therapy. Treatment may continue up to one year or until disease progression.
