  (0.7967)   I was diagnosed with a grade III Anaplastic Astrocytoma. My neurosurgeon (who is highly respected and has many years of experience) told me that when he took it out, it looked like a low grade glioma. No big deal. It wasn~t until after the results of the pathology came in that we found out I had brain cancer. Is it possible that the pathology report was wrong?

  (0.7967)   My niece was diagnosed with Anaplastic Astrocytoma two years ago. At that time, she had 2 brain surgeries and received radiation. Everything was going well until this past September when the tumor reoccured on both sides of the brain and was a GBM. She has undergone Temador and CPT11 and has also had a shunt put in to reduce swelling. Her last MRI showed no sign of the tumor; however, in the past week she has been experiencing shaking of her right arm and some in the left arm as well. No one has been able to explain this since she is not on any medicine that would make this happen. The first major tumor was on the right. Do you have an explanation?

  (0.7967)   My daughter had a Anaplastic Astrocytoma tumor, everything removed and she had radiation. She is still on Dilantin 400 mg a day for over a year now. How long will she have to stay on this level and can this be reduced? Can the operation she had for the tumor cause other problems such as breathing issues. She has some forgetfulness to this day. Wilm this ever go away and what can she do to help improve this? She takes only 2 courses in college because her doctor does not want too much stress on her. How long before that changes?

  (0.7967)   My son-in-law had an Anaplastic Astrocytoma removed 18 months ago from his right posterior frontal lobe. Recently, he started experiencing slurred speech, vomiting and frequent grand mal seizures. Does this signal recurrence? If so, what else can we expect during his last stages?

  (0.7967)   My father is 63 with an inoperable Anaplastic Astrocytoma III. The tumor was 16 mm circumference. He has had whole brain radiotherapy and is now on a Temodar drug trial. It has almost disappeared! Have you seen this before? I have not read of this on the internet.

  (0.7967)   My 28-year-old brother was diagnosed with Anaplastic Astrocytoma and is being treated at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He is to start radiation with low dose Temodar in one week, followed by high dose Temodar. What is the success rate of this treatment in preventing reoccurance, and what factors affect whether this treatment works on some people but not on others?

  (0.7967)   I know that brain tumors have a tendency to run in families. Surprisingly, both my mother and father passed away from brain tumors, my mother about 25 years ago and my father 18 years ago. Six years ago my father's younger brother also passed away after being diagnosed with Anaplastic Astrocytoma. I checked at that time and there were no prior known incidents of anybody else having tumors in the family. I do not have the details on the type of tumors my parents had. All three of them used to live next to a pharmacetical drug company and my father and his brother worked there for a few years. I was born there and we moved to a new place within 2 years. All this haunts me and makes me wonder what to expect. Is there anything I can do to stay on top of this? I know we are still trying to find a cure, forget prevent the occurence of one.

  (0.7967)   My daughter is 21 and was diagnosed with an Anaplastic Astrocytoma. She had two operations to remove the tumor. She then had 6 weeks of radiation. She has had two MRIs that came back clean. My questions are: 1) when will she be considered a cancer survivor, that is, how many years of clean MRIs does it take, and 2) what is the chance of this tumor returning.

  (0.7967)   I was having multiple seizures and was found to have a large (4.3 cm x 5 cm) Anaplastic Astrocytoma in my right frontal lobe. It was removed a year ago and I have been seizure free until recently. I have been on Dilantin so doesn't the return of seizures mean the return of the tumor? What symptoms should I be aware of for tumor regrowth?

The first step in determining the nature of this new growth is a Thallium scan. My question is: how accurate is this test in differentiating between cancer and necrosis?

  (0.7967)   I have been diagnosed with an Anaplastic Astrocytoma (nonoperable due to risk per 3 neurosurgeons). I have numbness in my left arm/leg/side due to tumor pressure in the right side of the brain on my thalmus. Can anything be done to remove or dull the numbness, short of surgery?

  (0.7967)   My husband had an Anaplastic Astrocytoma resected (60%). He had an awake surgery. The doctors left some tumor in so he would have use of the leg. The tumor effected his foot and calf. After the surgery, he could walk pretty well, without a cane, but with a brace. Now, five months later, after radiation and continuing chemotherapy, he has significant atrophy in the calf and must wear a brace (for foot drop). The MRI shows swelling (he is on Decadron) but no new tumor growth. He does PT 3 - 4 times/week. What is the possibility of his leg regaining strength and him walking as well as he did right after surgery? I have heard the other side of the brain can sometimes take over. Is this a case where this could happen and how long would it take? Is there anthing else we can do?

  (0.7742)   What is the difference between diffuse astrocytoma grade three, a GBM, and AA grade three? Is it common for low white counts and low platelet counts to continually delay temodar treatments by a couple of weeks?

  (0.7742)   My husband (30 years old) had a craniotomy on 11/25/02. The pathology was Anaplastic Astrocytoma. He started radiation and Temodar on 12/19/02 and he was fine until yesterday. He checked his Dilantin level on 1/24/03 and it was 23. His oncologist told us to decrease the dosage of Dilantin to 400 mg/day from 500 mg/day. Last night (2/4/03), he had a grand mal seizure and this is his first seizure after the surgery. My question is: did the seizure happen because the tumor recurred?

  (0.7742)   I am a 38-year-old male, right frontal lobe tumor. First surgery in May, 2002, partial debulking. Original size was equivalent to an elongated golf ball. Original diagnosis was a pure oligodendroglioma, grade II. Second surgery, September 19, 2002, intra-operative MRI, the bulk of what was resected was oligo, but with a small portion of tumor with astrocytes close to the motor strip. My new diagnosis was Anaplastic Astrocytoma, grade III. A very small portion of the tumor was left behind to be treated by radiation and chemo (Temodar). My first MRI last week (1/13/03), post-radiation therapy, was clean, which was expected. I am in my 3rd of 10 cycles of Temodar. I feel like I am spinning my wheels researching stuff and I am starting to see the same information repeated on several sites. I have two small children and a very strong will to live as long as possible. I am changing my diet, work out when I can, and doing my due diligence into natural supplements to help my body operate as effectively as possible so it can fight! Is there anything else I can be doing to fight this thing or just have my MRIss every 3 months and stay in this holding pattern? I know the doctors can only tell me what the stats are regarding prognosis using large populations of patients. I feel like I have a lot going for me, which will enable me to reach the upper limits of the prognosis range given to me. Comments?

  (0.7742)   I am 31 and had an Anaplastic Astrocytoma totally resected from my left frontal lobe on 2/3/2003. My KPS is 100. I finished 6 weeks of radation and I am starting my 4th round of Temodar next week. I have 3 questions. I feel wonderful except for chemo weeks. First, what is my chances of surival? Second, I have experienced severe nausea with Temodar even though I have tried Ativan, Kytril, and Phenergan. Is there anything else you could suggest? My oncologist is at a lost. Third, I am in a clinical trial with the Temodar. I am to take it for 12 months. Is this the normal dosage time?

  (0.7742)   My friend had surgery about 3 weeks ago for a tumor. The doctor was pretty sure it was benign, but the labs came back as an Anaplastic Astrocytoma. She has already had 3 Cyberknife treatments. My problem is that I feel they are rushing her into more radiation and chemotherapy treatments before they know if the first treatments worked. It was a primary tumor and quite small. Could you help me with the usual time frame for all this?

  (0.7742)   My partner was diagnosed with an Anaplastic Astrocytoma two months ago. It is located above the thalamus and was biopsied only. He is completing six weeks of radiotherapy with 8 treatments to go. We have seen two neuro-oncologists who have differning opinions on chemotherapy. One of the doctors has advised treatment with BCNU commencing one month after radiotherapy is completed. This would be done every 8 weeks for a year. The other doctor has advised not using any chemotherapy until there is a recurrence. Can you please advise if there are any trial results on timing of chemotherapy and which chemotherapy regimen is most beneficial in the treatment of AA. Also, are there any other trial results that look promising? We are in Melbourne, Australia so have limited access to trials but are willing to fly to the States if need be.

  (0.7742)   My father was diagnosed with Anaplastic Astrocytoma. He had surgery, radiation and has now just completed his 3rd cycle of Temodar. He is on Decadron and Dilantin. His MRIss show no growth of the tumor but he still is experiencing edema so we had to increase the Decadron dosage. This seems to be common from what I have read, however, I am wondering if there are any averages or information on this or if this swelling will ever decrease since its been over 4 months since radiation and he seems to be responding to the Temodar.

  (0.7742)   Any ideas on how to handle fatigue in a 50-year-old male with a Anaplastic Astrocytoma, who is undergoing PCV therapy? He sleeps about 12 hours a day and is tired the time he is up.
